Integrated Water Quality Management in Tolo Harbour , Hong Kong - A Case Study
نویسنده
چکیده
Abstract Tolo Harbour is an almost land-locked semi-enclosed sea inlet with a narrow outlet in the South China Sea. With the rapid growth in economic development and urbanization, evidence of increasing eutrophication is seen by the drastic increase in the severity and frequency of algae blooms, which are closely correlated to the excessive nutrient loading. The bottom waters in Tolo Harbour exhibit serious dissolved oxygen depletion. A co-ordinated sequence of pollution control activities are being undertaken by the Hong Kong Government. Technological advances can be utilized in effective water quality management in the coastal zone. This paper presents the application of a robust three-dimensional numerical eutrophication model, integrating hydrodynamics with water quality, for simulation of the algal growth dynamics and water quality processes. After calibration and verification, the tool is used to predict different eutrophication scenarios as well as the effectiveness of alternative management solution strategies.

Macrobenthic Community in Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong and its Relations with Heavy Metals
The present study investigated the macrobenthic community in Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong, aiming at linking heavy metal concentrations to differences in macrobenthic community. The stations investigated in Tolo Harbour have widely contrasting features, with some areas located in the Plove Cove displaying both high species richness and abundance while other areas displaying quite impoverished or eve...
متن کاملEstimation of submarine groundwater discharge and associated nutrient fluxes in Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong.
Tolo Harbour, located in the northeastern part of Hong Kong's New Territories, China, has a high frequency of algal blooms and red tides. An attempt was made to first quantify the submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) into Tolo Harbour using (226)Ra, and then to estimate the nutrient fluxes into the Harbour by this pathway. The total SGD was estimated to be 8.28×10(6) m(3) d(-1), while the fres...

Plover Cove, a small cove in the Harbour, was selected for SGD analysis usin...
متن کاملSpatio-temporal trends of heavy metals and source apportionment in Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong
This study provided a picture of the spatial and temporal distributions of Cr, Co, Ni Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb in bottom sediments of Tolo Harbour. The concentrations of the eight heavy metals differed significantly between sites due to the poor tidal flushing in Tolo Harbour. The levels of Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were generally enriched in sediments from inner Tolo Harbour, while sediments from outer T...
متن کاملAlgal Bloom Prediction with Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm
Precise prediction of algal booms is beneficial to fisheries and environmental management since it enables the fish farmers to gain more ample time to take appropriate precautionary measures. Since a variety of existing water quality models involve exogenous input and different assumptions, artificial neural networks have the potential to be a cost-effective solution. However, in order to accom...
